The First-Ever Family PND Picnic
Today is the day that the Philippines celebrates its independence. So in honour of the day, my cousins and I decided to hold our very own family PND (Philippine National Day) picnic.
Now, I know I'm not the most culturally aware Filipina. I don't speak the language, nor do I know a lot about the country or its history. Heck, I grew up very Canadian. What I do know about being Filipino is more meshed with what I know about being a part of my extended family. I know how my family defines itself. I see it like a system within a system. It's along the lines of: me, then my family, then the human race, then the world. Hopefully before my big pilgrimage to the Motherland in the fall for the sibling's wedding, I will have picked up a rudimentary knowledge of the country and the language. For now, the way I celebrate my roots, is by spending quality time with my family.
Sometimes I feel like the affirmative action poster-child: female, filipino, bi-sexual, and temporarily handicapped.

Oh, and FoxyLady met the cousins at the picnic today too. This is getting very couply-feeling to me. My favourite parts were when we goofily played frisbee in the sun, and she picked a bouquet of wildflowers for me. We are getting TOO cute for our own good. Sigh.
